The lack of state grammar schools in Surrey eases the pressure for 11-plus tutoring although families living in some north Surrey postcodes (eg Esher, Epsom, Walton-on-Thames, Weybridge) will tutor for a shot at Tiffin School and The Tiffin Girls’ School in Kingston.

Most of the county’s independent senior schools set entrance assessments for which families will use tutors – especially the more competitive, selective seniors – regardless of the fact that many schools actively discourage it. Others opt to use tutors for top-up learning at key stage 2, additional support for GCSE and A level subjects, and specialised help for children with special educational needs.
